Council responds to tent pitched on The Glebe, Bowness

COUNCIL officers and police 'are aware' of a tent pitched illegally at a busy Lake District tourist spot.

The Glebe at Bowness is Westmorland and Furness Council land and therefore it is not permitted to pitch a tent there.

A member of a Windermere and Bowness group on social media uploaded the photo on Wednesday and said jokingly 'new campsite on Glebe, now open.'

A spokesman for Westmorland and Furness Council said: "The Council and Police are aware of a tent pitched on The Glebe. Council officers have attended this morning (August 3) and left an informal notice asking the occupant(s) to move on or to contact the council if they need assistance.

"While this is a rare occurrence, camping on council land is not permitted. In any instances where this is reported, the council will check for any welfare issues and should support be needed, individuals will be referred to the Homelessness Team. If occupants fail to move on, a legal notice is served with a timescale to adhere to.

“Our parks and open spaces are for everyone to enjoy, and we ask that people respect and use them appropriately.”
